Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 5, 2026
Footholds is an app that helps you prepare for a talk you have coming up. This policy covers the app and this website, and explains what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how to delete it. Footholds is run by the Footholds team ("we", "us").
What we collect
What you give us
- Account details. If you create an account, we store your email address and a password (we only keep a securely hashed version of the password, never the password itself). You can use Footholds as a guest without one.
- Your talks. The title, date, length, kind of talk and audience you enter, plus any script you write.
- Your rehearsals. The audio you record while practising, and the transcript and numbers we produce from it: length, pace, filler words and pauses.
- Your reflections. How you say a talk went, the issues you pick, any note you write, and the nerves ratings you give before and after. We also note when you use the steadying routine.
What we record automatically
- Days you open the app. We record which days you open the app so we can tell whether Footholds helps people keep practising. We don't track what you do on other apps or websites.
- Purchases. If you buy a Talk Pass or Pro, Apple processes the payment. We receive a record of what you bought and when, but never your card details.
On this website
- The waitlist. If you join, we keep your email address and, if you choose one, roughly when your next talk is, so we can invite you. We send you a confirmation email and one email when your invite is ready.
- Visit statistics. Our website host, Lovable, records basic statistics about visits, such as pages viewed, where the visit came from, and device type.
We don't collect your contacts, your location, or your photos. We don't use advertising trackers or sell your data.
How we use it
- To run the app: build your rehearsal plan, measure your rehearsals, keep your history, and remind you about your talk (reminders are scheduled on your device).
- To fit the rest of your plan to what you actually said and wrote, only if you turn this on (see below).
- To provide what you paid for.
- To understand, in aggregate, whether Footholds is helping people, so we can improve it.
AI processing (only with your permission)
Footholds asks before it sends anything you made to an AI service. If you say yes:
- Your recordings are sent to OpenAI (Whisper) to be turned into a transcript. If Whisper is unavailable, they go to Google (Gemini) instead.
- Your script and transcripts are sent to Anthropic (Claude) to fit your remaining rehearsal steps to your talk. If Claude is unavailable, they go to OpenAI instead.
- These requests go through OpenRouter, a service that routes them to the right provider.
These providers receive your data only to send a result back to us. You can switch this off at any time in Settings → Privacy, and you can still record without it; you just won't get the numbers.
Who else handles your data
We use a few service providers to run Footholds. They only process data on our behalf:
- Supabase stores your account, talks, recordings and history (servers in the United States).
- OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google handle AI processing, only if you've turned it on (see above).
- RevenueCat keeps track of purchases. It receives your Footholds account ID and your purchase history, but not your recordings or scripts.
- Apple processes payments and delivers the app.
- Resend sends emails, such as sign-in codes and waitlist confirmations.
- Lovable hosts this website and stores the waitlist.
We'll also share data if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, we delete your recordings first, then your account and everything linked to it: talks, scripts, transcripts, reflections and history. That happens straight away, though copies can remain in routine backups for a short time before they are overwritten. Purchase records held by Apple and RevenueCat are kept by them as their own policies and tax law require.
Your choices and rights
- Delete everything: in the app, go to Settings and tap Delete account at the bottom.
- Turn off AI processing: go to Settings → Privacy.
- Turn off reminders: use the switches in Settings, or your phone's notification settings.
- Get a copy of your data, or ask us anything: email support@footholds.app.
Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, the UK or California), you may have extra rights to access, correct, move or delete your data, or to object to how we use it. Email us and we'll help. We won't treat you differently for asking.
Where your data is processed
Our servers are in the United States, and the providers above may process data in other countries. If you're in the EU or UK, we rely on your consent for AI processing (you can withdraw it any time in Settings), on our contract with you to run the app and provide what you paid for, and on our legitimate interest in understanding how Footholds is used. Transfers outside the EU/UK rely on our providers' standard contractual safeguards.
To leave the waitlist, email us and we'll remove you.
Children
Footholds is made for adults preparing real talks. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child under 13 has given us data, email support@footholds.app and we'll delete it.
Security
Your data is sent encrypted and stored with access controls, so each account can only read its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect yours.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app first.
